Concrete Screed Review

Jim ordered a TTI Screedright Pro early last summer and here is a short review of his experience with the one man power concrete screed.

Tom,

I used the TTI power Screedright Pro to work 6500 sq ft of concrete. We tried to keep the concrete 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the bottom edge of the 2×4. We laid 8 ft x 83 ft and 10 ft x 83 ft strips inside the Morton Bldg. On the outside the door slabs were 20 ft x 30 ft. A 10 ft x 60 ft sidewalk was added to one side of the building. Their were three people and the Screedright that did the concrete work. The Screedright packed the concrete very well. A few times their were areas that we had to go over twice because the concrete was high in areas. Plastic tips were fabricated to fit on the ends of the 2×4’s used to decrease the ware on them. The Subaru engine worked great and started on the first pull. The throttle cable worked, but could be better. It would stick and needed to be adjusted quite often. The Screedright packed the concrete at 1/3 throttle speed very well and did a very nice job with all the concrete we had to pour. Working with concrete is a very hard job and you need that extra helping hand. The TTI Screedright Pro was a very good investment and it saved us time and labor hours. It was easy for one person to handle. Doing the work ourselves saved us thousands of dollars! Tom, I would like to see you develop an aluminum adjustable edge (length wise) besides using a 2×4. I am sending you pictures of the concrete work we did with your machine.

Regards,
Jim K. South Dakota

Thanks for the pictures Jim… great building project!

THE Concrete Screed for Municipalities, School Districts & Other Govornment Entities

We have sold several of the TTI Screedright Pro concrete screeds to municipalities, school districts and other government entities over the years. If you are a director in one of these areas, it would make perfect sense for you to have one as well.
Here is a letter from Ray Alley, City Manager/Public Works Director for the town of Holbrook Arizona. He purchased two to use for their city needs.

Tom & Karen Gabriel,

-As you stated in your email the City of Holbrook purchased not one but 2 screedright pros power screeds from your company.

Let me explain why we had to buy 2….. The City of Holbrook took on a very aggressive street project where we are replacing asphalt with concrete roads. In doing so we ordered our first power screed from you and laid well over 2 miles of new concrete roads with the little screed. We were pulling 16 foot pulls even though you said it was made for 12 foot. After completing the 2 miles of road we thought we better order a backup screed from you in case the first one ever went down. Long story short we have done a few more miles of road and have still not had to even open the new one because the first one is still going strong. I have been doing concrete for 30 + years and have never had a more valuable tool than your little screed…

If you ever need a testimonial you are more than welcome to give out my name and number to any potential buyers.

Again thanks for such a wonderful product

Newest Concrete Screed Video

This video was sent in by Norman from Puerto Rico. Norman purchased two screeds a few months ago to use on a large road project his company was pouring in central Puerto Rico. We were excited to receive this video and loved how we were able to check out the TTI Screedright Pro in action thousands of miles away. It looks as if the concrete company formed up two very long strips of road and then poured each side in one long concrete pour. No doubt the concrete screed quickened the process along and alleviated wear and tear on the crew.
Because the TTI Screedright Pro utilizes a wooden 2 X 4, it can be easily shipped to most locations. Aluminum screed bars are costly to ship and often require special truck shipping. The TTI Screedright Pro ships in one box and comes ready to go. The operator has to attach the handle bar, add a wooden screed bar and add gas.
Another reason that the TTI Screedright Pro is a popular choice is that the owner can cut the screed bar to his desired length for each project. No need to carry around various sizes of screed bars. Thanks for sending in this video Norman!

Aluminum Screed Bar on the Concrete Screed

The TTI Screedright Pro utilizes a wooden 2X4 as a screed bar. Every so often Tom gets the question: “Can I use an aluminum bar on your screed?” Sometimes concrete guys like to use a metal tube as a screed bar or they have purchased several sizes of aluminum screed bars and want to use them.
While the TTI Screedright Pro was originally designed to accept a wooden 2″ X 4″, it is possible to use an aluminum screed bar as long as the width is 1 1/2 inches. The ears on the concrete screed are designed to saddle over a 2″ X 4″ , which is actually 1 1/2″ wide.

Trade Tool Innovations is currently looking into offering a Screedright Pro that accepts a magnesium screed bar.  The new screed owner would have the option of using a 2″ wide magnesium screed bar or a wooden 2″ X 4″ by simply adding a 1/2″ plywood shim.

Concrete people around the world… let us know what you prefer!  Are you a 2″ X 4″ guy or a magnesium only guy?  If you like the idea of using an aluminum screed bar, let us know and tell us why!  We will toss in free shipping when we get the new screed design up and running.

We will always offer the 2″ X 4″ design.  We have noticed that some concrete professionals and hobbyist prefer the ease of cutting the screed bar to fit the job.

Sealed Stamped Concrete

Here is an update to my previous post on stamped concrete. The concrete contractor added a colored seal to the edging of the new concrete driveway for a new construction home. The contractor also included a little landscaping in the new home package.

The first thing to consider when looking for a concrete sealer is to examine weather the sealer will be applied indoors or outdoors.  For this project, the contractor was looking for a product specific for outdoor use.  Your product should have good UV resistance and also be waterproof.    Usually an area like this gets a lot of foot and vehicle traffic and the new homeowner should consider applying a new coating every couple of years or so.

Trade Tool Innovations visits Triton Marine Construction

I finally put a video together of our stop-in to see Steve at Triton Marine Construction in Oahu Hawaii. Triton Marine purchased two concrete screeds to use for their company. After shipping them UPS to Hawaii, Steve and crew retrofitted the screed to meet their need. They work on the famous “Cam Highway” on Oahu by repairing the concrete decking. Steve told us that they use a fast drying quick lay concrete to patch up spots on the highway and then use the TTI Screedright Pro to strike off the wet concrete. The concrete screed is a big help in expediting fast, flat concrete pours like the highway decking repair in Hawaii.
Triton Marine extended the handle bars on the TTI Screedright Pro to reach across the highway. Triton Marine also modified the screed to accept a true 2″ X 4″ magnesium screed bar.
The damaged highway decking is first sprayed with a high power stream of water that leaves the steel reinforcement exposed. The area is then filled with concrete and struck off with the concrete screed. The process is so efficient that the repaired stretch of highway is ready for traffic in a matter of hours.
We had a great trip and one of the highlights was certainly seeing the screed on the job site! Mahalo Steve and Triton Marine!

Do It Yourself America!

Stand up America! Do it yourself! Stop waiting for Obama, Oprah, whoever to bail you out! In a day and age where it seems we are lead to believe that the American dream will be handed to us if only we are on the right “reality show”…
I say: Here is a reality show for America!

Election Day Hangover

Sorry all. Much has happened since the date of my last post. It has been a busier-than-ever summer for us here at Trade Tool Innovations. New building addition, lots of work from the University of Wyoming, several screeds sold.
I thought I’d focus on the last category today. I’ll catchya all up on our building addition and the projects at UW in later posts.
It seems to me that TTI has it’s own version of the “election day map”. You know, those techinicolor, interactive, creations of the mass media that every major network now sports on election night. They are computer generated visual aides for all of America to glue their eyes to as the election results began to pour in. My personal favorite was NBC’s Ann Curry “green room” experience. Fake charts, real results.
But back to the thought at hand.
As most of you know, Trade Tool Innovations is a tightly run ship. We like to keep our costs down so we can pass it on to our customers. Today, the day after election day ’08 and just 24 short months until we begin to hear rummblings of election day ’12, I will locate our own TTI “tracking map” on the toolsbytom website. The prototype model is hung in the corporate office/den at 21 Hidden Springs Rd.
The “shade” states represent those states where a TTI Screedright Pro was sold and sent from our shop. The states that are not colored in represent the places where we have not sent a TTI Screedright Pro, yet. If you live in one of the “non-red” states… give us a call, order a screed, and recieve free shipping (offer ends Jan 1, 2009, unless we decide to extend it).

I’m Karen Gabriel, and I endorse this blog message.
